I lived in a small cabin without electricity or running water on Jack's property for a year and a half when I was twenty or so. There, I learned to garden, heat with firewood, otherwise develop the skills for living closer to the earth. It was a mentor relationship that has always made me think of Thoreau and Emerson. Jack turned me on to reading Wendell Berry and James Agee, listening to Pink Floyd, and grafting fruit trees. I will always treasure his impact on my formative years and his continuing friendship.
